Small U.S. chains look farther afield for franchisees

Denver-based Smashburger and other small U.S. chains have shifted gears from domestic expansion and aim to compete head-on with big players including McDonald's in international markets including the Middle East, which has stayed prosperous amid the downturn. "Five years ago, few smaller brands would have considered these markets," said franchise consultant William Edwards.
