Handset sales drop in Q3; Android dominates smartphone market

Third-quarter sales of mobile handsets dropped 3% from third-quarter 2011 levels to 428 million, according to a Gartner survey, but smartphones were up 47% to 169 million units, about 40% of the market. Samsung retained its lead in global sales among manufacturers, and the Android OS accounted for nearly 3 in 4 smartphone sales for the quarter.
