Proper placing of trees helps reduce energy use

To save on energy costs, plant trees at the strategic spots around the house to lessen sun and wind exposure, writes James Cummins, executive director of nonprofit group Wildlife Mississippi. Trees can provide shade and improve cooling, or block cold winds to reduce the strain on the heater. Use deciduous species to allow sunlight to enter the house during winter, Cummins notes.
