Qatar to use desert land for greenhouse, solar power

The Sahara Forest Project is a $5.3 million pilot plan to transform approximately 2.5 acres of desert land in Qatar's Mesaieed Industrial City into a center for food and freshwater production. The site will have photovoltaic panels, concentrated solar power and a saltwater cooling system. "By bringing these technologies together [we can] ... create zero-carbon food in some of the most water-stressed parts of the planet, produce abundant renewable energy, revegetate deserts ... as well as providing food and livelihoods for large numbers of people in parts of the world that are really going to be suffering from climate change over the course of the next few decades," said architect Michael Pawlyn, the project's founding member.
