Smartphone sales soared in third quarter led by Samsung, Apple

Global sales of smartphones rose 47% in the third quarter compared with the previous year as Samsung Electronics and Apple accounted for almost half of the market and Nokia slid from third place in market share a year ago to seventh, according to a Gartner report. Total cellphone unit sales slipped as Samsung held a rising 23% market share while Apple, ZTE and Huawei also gained. Among operating systems, Android increased its share from 52.5% to 72.4% as Nokia's Symbian and Research In Motion's BlackBerry platforms fell sharply while Samsung's Bada rose to fourth place.
