The National Institute of General Medical Sciences is ending the Protein Structure Initiative to predict structures for possible amino-acid sequences, and the Pharmaco­genomics Research Network to study the role genes play in drug efficacy will lose its protected budget. Scientists disagree over whether the cuts are positive or negative. Some say budget cuts and the sequester have forced NIH institutes to more closely scrutinize projects and set higher standards for funding.
