Enhanced maintenance seen as key to keep crude-by-rail safe

In the wake of some issues with petroleum products carried by rail, the Association of American Railroads has asked that older cars be retrofit and new cars be made more safe. Other lobbying groups are up in arms. They contend the focus should be placed on improving rail maintenance and operations, instead of the more costly tank car retrofitting.
