Palliative experts offer tips for getting best cancer care

Cancer is a very personal disease, so patients and families must learn to be good health care consumers and choose care that fits their values and preferences, according to Dr. David Goodman of the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care Project and palliative care specialist and author Dr. Ira Byock. Tips for getting good cancer care, the experts said, include knowing that hospice and palliative care may extend life, seeking a cure if it is available, and understanding that more medical treatments may not always be the best choice.
