Fifth-graders at Valley of Enchantment Elementary School in Crestline, Calif., learned principles of math, science and engineering by building full-sized boats made of plastic bottles, PVC pipes and duct tape. Students received some foundation lessons on buoyancy and design before taking on the project-based learning challenge. "We use the NASA design process," fifth-grade teacher Mark Warhol said. "We pose the problem, set the parameters and then break into teams to work on the problem."
