Commentary: Transitional-duty programs reduce workers' comp costs

Risk managers should strive to develop transitional-duty programs that will allow employees to return to work immediately after successfully recovering from a work-related injury, writes Joseph J. Abriola, vice president of claims and managed care for Key Risk. Such programs can increase the company's morale and bring down workers' compensation costs, he argued. While TDP approach varies among employers, workers and injuries, it should be executed consistently to ensure success, he said.
