South African government to review Wal-Mart, Massmart proposal

A panel established by South Africa's government will consider how Wal-Mart Stores' proposal to acquire a large stake in Massmart Holdings will affect competition, labour relations, exchange rates and other areas of business, said Ebrahim Patel, the country's economic development minister. Wal-Mart is interested in gaining a foothold in the fast-growing continent, but is facing resistance from unions.
