Hurricane Irene, higher demand boosts Home Depot sales

Same-store sales at Home Depot stores rose 4.2% in the third quarter, compared to the same period last year, driven in part by higher spending related to Hurricane Irene on the East Coast and higher demand for home-improvement materials in the west, the company said. Consumers are continuing to spend on home-maintenance projects and starting to shop more for bigger-ticket items such as kitchen cabinets, the company said.
