Reducing workers' frustration can improve engagement

Employees' willingness to work hard can be undermined when they have to fight through red tape with insufficient resources and authority, says leadership coaching researcher Mark Royal. "Any organization can succeed in the short term through the force of motivating people to work harder, but over the longer term, if organizations are not about helping people work smart rather than just hard, that motivation and their success is going to suffer," Royal says.
