The Department of Energy's shale-gas advisory panel released the second half of its recommendations for safety improvements in hydraulic fracturing. Drillers "should increase their best field engineering practices and environmental control activities by adopting the objective of continuous improvement. ... This is the surest path forward to assure that shale gas is produced in an environmentally sound fashion, and in a way that meets the needs of public trust," said John Deutch, chairman of the panel. The recommendations will go to Energy Secretary Steven Chu.
