R.I. sets new standards for aspiring teachers

Under standards for teacher-preparation programs in Rhode Island that are set to begin in 2016-17, each class of teacher candidates must have scored in the top half of college-entrance exams such as the SAT. By 2020, candidates need to score in the top third of the tests. The standards also encourage pairing trainees with highly qualified teachers and hold recent graduates accountable for their students' performance.
