Republicans request farm bill extension

The U.S. Senate's farm bill, which has been stalled in the Senate as legislators debate amendments, could be delayed until after the 2008 elections, according to Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin, prompting some Republican senators to propose a one-year extension. "Outside the Beltway there are a whole lot of farmers and ranchers waiting for Congress to act so they can plan and plant next year's crop," Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, said. "This will give them the certainty necessary to do that."
