A recent syndicated column about a family's awkward airport farewell to a son leaving for Iraq prompted an e-mail from the Transportation Security Administration, pointing out that military families may obtain gate passes from the airlines that allow them to accompany their loved ones through security. Why, the writer wants to know in a follow-up column, is this policy not actively promoted by airports, airlines and TSA?
