Free shipping, once a nice surprise for online and catalog shoppers, has become a necessity if retailers want to keep customers coming back. Bargain-hunting shoppers have come to expect the perk with no strings attached, and retailers are increasingly obliging. "Consumers feel it's their right to buy online without paying for shipping," says Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org.
