Connecting with friends, family easily tops other social media uses

Friends and family far outpace other interests -- including keeping up with public figures -- for users of social media, according to a study by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project. Two-thirds of users cited staying in touch with family and friends as their motivation, while about half said social media help them find old friends. Meanwhile, 14% cited shared interests and hobbies, and 5% mentioned following celebrities.
