Students send Thanksgiving gifts, messages to overseas airman

Adopting a member of the military can be used by teachers to convey lessons of selflessness, appreciation of those who sacrifice for others as well as geography and current events. Kindergarteners in Cottonwood Elementary School teacher Jenny Nash's class had an even closer tie to their adoptee, Fran O'Leen, Nash's sister-in-law and an airman stationed in Afghanistan. In addition to sending a Thanksgiving basket and cards, the students were able to speak with O'Leen using FaceTime from their Paola, Kan., classroom.
