ACA accelerates consolidation, and that might not be a bad thing

The Affordable Care Act is likely to accelerate the movement away from small, neighborhood hospitals and toward larger, consolidated facilities and acute care centers where more patients will receive a higher level of care, writes Dr. Robert Pearl. The transition will be lengthy and difficult and will face opposition from a variety of stakeholders but, once complete, could mark a new, more effective and affordable era of health care, he writes.
