FDA stands by controversial abortion pill after call for removal

The agency said the safety profile of the RU-486 drug, as well as steps taken by the FDA, allow the drug to be used safely. In addition, the FDA said medical evidence, not conservative groups' political pressure, caused the agency Monday to call for expanding the black box labeling for RU-486 to include warnings about vaginal bleeding and sepsis and information about ectopic pregnancies.
