Extra time for planning, professional development angers parents

A Massachusetts district's decision to add to the middle-school calendar two more early-release days in which students are dismissed from school early so that teachers can engage in professional development to improve teaching quality and curriculum has prompted some parent complaints. Parents say their children should be spending more time in school, not less, and the irregular schedule makes finding after-school supervision difficult.
