Software helps evaluate earthquakes' threat to bridges

A new computer model will allow Oregon scientists to see how a severe earthquake would affect individual bridges and to prioritize which bridges should receive seismic upgrades. "There are lots of details, engineering-wise, that will help us plan better which bridges to triage and in what order," a state Department of Transportation spokesman said. Observers note that an earthquake with a magnitude between 8.0 and 9.0 would destroy 399 bridges and severely damage 621.
