Funding hopes fade for HSR, focus turns to Northeast Corridor

President Barack Obama had asked for $8 billion in the fiscal 2012 budget for high-speed rail -- and an additional $53 billion over six years -- but it's not likely to happen. Congressional negotiators have nixed funds for HSR, and the bill will be voted on later this week in both chambers. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica, R-Fla., said the focus should be placed on high-speed Northeast Corridor service, and Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., said, "We are being given a chance to refocus and reform the high-speed rail program."
