Expert: Supply chain management soon will be "core function"

Supply chain management will be "the core function of the future" as globalization requires companies to optimize the entire supply chain, rather than just procurement, McKinsey Director Emeritus Peter Kraljic said. This shift may require a "new skill-set" for supply chain managers, as automation, off-shoring and outsourcing become more common, said Alex Saric of Ariba. Saric advises supply chain professionals to build skills in analytics and relationship-building.
