Solar panels, living roof could help Calif. arena win LEED Gold

A 27,000-square-foot "living roof" and 1,162 solar panels are among the sustainable features that will be included at the San Francisco 49ers' new stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., in a bid to achieve Gold status under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standard. The solar panels will be installed on the western roof on the arena, as well as on the roofs of three bridges, and produce 375 kilowatts of electricity. The stadium also recycles more than 75% of its building materials, and has achieved 42 points under LEED, exceeding the 39 needed for a Gold status.
