Report: Community hospital care comparable to academic, and it's cheaper

Community hospitals perform just as well in treating common illnesses and conditions as academic medical centers and do so for substantially less money, a new report says. A researcher compared patient outcome for 41 illnesses at community versus teaching hospitals in Massachusetts, Virginia, Illinois, Florida, New York and California, and found patients had lower rates of some post-surgical complications in teaching hospitals, but were slightly more likely to suffer certain infections and death.
