Opinion: Time for national policy on air transport

In an editorial for Aviation Daily, the former CEO of American Airlines and the chairman of the Business Travel Coalition argue that the time has come for a "coherent national air transportation policy." While airline deregulation may have accomplished the goal of lower fares, they write, it has done little to advance other priorities, including accessibility, safety, job stability and global competitiveness. The federal panel now looking into the state of the U.S. airline industry has the opportunity to "reshape its future in a way that strengthens our economy, benefits our workforce, improves the airline customer experience and enhances our position in international aviation," they conclude.
