Helmsley Trust funds virtual ICUs at rural hospitals

Money from the Helmsley Trust is going to develop virtual trauma and ICUs in rural hospitals that are then linked to Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Avera says the program has reduced average lengths of stay in remote ICUs by 25% and has allowed smaller hospitals to keep patients, and the revenues they generate, who otherwise would have been transferred to a larger facility.
