Why faculty should consider improvements to tenure

Chris Palmer, a film producer in residence and director of the Center for Environmental Filmmaking at American University, writes in this opinion piece that the tenure system in place in most colleges and universities can be improved. While there are some benefits to the system, he writes that offering professors "lifelong job security removes the incentive for high performance." He urges professors to work together to improve the system.
