ONC launches initiative to address prescription drug abuse

A new project launched by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT aims to leverage state-run drug databases to address problems with prescription drug abuse. The Prescription Drug Monitoring Program & Health IT Integration program pulls tracking data from multiple state prescription databases into EHRs and health information exchanges to enable doctors to easily identify patients who might be abusing prescription drugs.
