Research looks at social and health outcomes of VLBW young adults

Despite lagging those with normal birth weights in some educational, social and health outcomes, adults born with very low birth weights obtained similar ratings in terms of overall quality of life, researchers from New Zealand found. Most of the very low birth weight adults who had social or mental disabilities were those who were diagnosed with the disability since their childhood, according to the study in the journal Pediatrics.
