One-hour test detects harmful maternal bacteria

A new one-hour test is able to detect Group B Streptococcus in pregnant women as they go into labor. Previously, the test took 18 to 48 hours to produce results. The bacteria can be fatal to newborns, but if the mother tests positive for it, a simple antibiotic treatment can prevent transmission from mother to child.
