Rock & Republic peddles luxury with an attitude

For most fledgling fashion labels, a call from Barneys or Bloomingdale's would be akin to hitting the lottery. But Michael Ball, creator of the Rock & Republic brand, says he turned down deals with both major outlets to create an aura of scarcity for his $300 jeans. After just six years, Rock & Republic is a $300 million fashion powerhouse, and Ball continues to buck the conventional wisdom. He's currently plunging ahead with plans to extend his brand into hotels and restaurants despite the economic downturn.
