Column: Construction materials costs will post modest gains

The cost of construction materials will rise modestly over the winter and post larger increases throughout 2010, Jim Haughey writes. In October, the construction materials price index fell 0.2% from year-ago levels, he notes. Nevertheless, it has climbed 0.5% over the past three months. "The key negative drivers of materials price changes now are the depressed and still falling level of U.S. construction and a small lingering surplus of construction materials inventory," Haughey writes.
