Favorite for EU presidency strongly opposed Turkey joining EU

Officials in Belgium appeared to downplay a report that Belgian Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy, the apparent favorite to be the EU's first permanent president, strongly opposes allowing Turkey into the EU. "Turkey is not a part of Europe and will never be part of Europe," Van Rompuy said during a Council of Europe meeting. Belgian officials confirmed the statement but said it was made in opposition in 2004.
