Impulse betrays belt-tightening intentions

Despite the best intentions to economize during the downturn, 60% of women reported buying at least one impulse item during the past year and 15% said they do so often, according to a survey done for ShopSmart magazine. The average price of the unplanned purchases was $108, and 42% of respondents said they made the buy because they perceived it as a bargain. Apparel and food led the list of impulse items purchased.
