May: Airlines fully committed to environmental improvements

Air Transport Association airlines have a strong environmental record to date and are committed to improving even more, writes James May, president and CEO of the Air Transport Association, in a letter to the editor. Airlines that are members of the association improved their fuel efficiency by 110% between 1978 and 2008, he writes, and the group founded and co-leads the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative. In addition, ATA and others support a global framework complete with emissions targets and fuel-efficiency guidelines.
