House Republicans block an extension for unemployment benefits

A bill to extend U.S. unemployment benefits for three months has been defeated in the House, blocked by Republicans. Opponents said the $12 billion legislation would add to national debt. The Labor Department said jobless benefits will end for about 1.36 million people by the third week of December without congressional action.
