Alaska students make maps during Geography Awareness Week

Some fourth-graders in the Fairbanks, Alaska, area recently became geographers during Geography Awareness Week. Students in 28 classrooms were tasked with assembling a map of the lower 48 states and learning about its regions, cities, landmarks and natural features. "Geography teaches critical thinking and problem solving," said Katie Kennedy, University of Alaska Fairbanks geography education and outreach coordinator. "It's important to know where things are, but ... it's important for students to know how the world works."
