Aspen Skiing Co. fires up methane power plant

The Aspen Skiing Co. has branched out into energy production, striking a deal to build a low-carbon power plant that runs on captured methane from a nearby coal mine. The project is good for the environment but should also make the participants a tidy pile of money, says Matt Jones, Aspen Skiing chief financial officer. "If you appeal to charity [to solve climate change], you're only going to get so far so fast," he says. "To blow through that and create the kind of exponential growth you need, you've got to harness the force of capitalism."
