Banks set up war rooms as default loomed

Financial institutions spent millions of dollars last month planning contingencies in case of a U.S. default, including setting up war rooms, bank executives say. JPMorgan Chase was prepared to front its customers money for programs such as Social Security and food stamps, which would have cost $5 billion a month, according to an unnamed source.
