Green roofs trump cool roofs in benefits but cost more

Green roofs may provide more sustainable benefits than cool roofs but might cost more to install, according to this article. Extensive or intensive green roofs can protect a roof from sunlight, control stormwater runoff and reduce pollution but cost "between $15 to $20 per square foot" to install, according to the "Urban Design Tools: Low Impact Development." Meanwhile, cool roofs reflect heat more than traditional roofs and cost $0.75 to $1.50 per square foot to install, according to the EPA.gov website.
