Landscape businesses and garden centers are the last to benefit when the housing market improves, said Sam Quillen, operator of Waynesboro Garden Center in Virginia. "Everybody's business will pick up before ours will," Quillen said. These businesses also deal with seasonal downtime, so when winter slows the demand for outdoor landscaping, Quillen compensates with snow removal and indoor planting projects.
