U.K. agency releases draft guidance for sickle cell treatment

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has released draft standards for the care and management of inpatients with sickle cell crises. The document calls for nurses to conduct thorough assessments of patients with acute painful sickle cell episodes to ensure proper pain relief medication is administered. Sickle cell disease patients should undergo assessment for acute chest syndrome if they have irregular respiratory signs, chest pain, fever or indicators of hypoxia.
