The most advanced automatic-sprinkler systems on the market measure rainfall and soil moisture to determine how much water to use. Still, experts say that these systems aren't perfect. A recent evaluation of six smart controllers found that they consistently applied more water than recommended. Nevertheless, experts note that the systems have the potential to save water because they adjust water use to weather conditions.
