In Chicago, midlevel grocers are squeezed

High-end grocers such as Whole Foods Market and discount chains such as ALDI and Wal-Mart Stores are thriving in Chicago, while midtier chains Jewel-Osco and Dominick's are closing stores. The Fresh Market, offering a European-style experience with prepared food, classical music and a large produce section, has been opening stores in the Chicago area since 2005, with a fifth coming to Crystal Lake, Ill., at month's end.
