Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes needs different approach, experts say

The needs of patients with cystic fibrosis–related diabetes are different from those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, according to a Johns Hopkins University-sponsored meeting on pediatric nutrition. Experts said the peak age for CFRD onset ranges from 20 to 24, but HbA1C screening may not be helpful in identifying high-risk patients due in part to the prevalence of false negatives. The disease is also linked to protein catabolism, lung function decline and increased mortality, making screening and early diagnosis of CFRD important.
