Study links EHR portal access to higher health care use

Patients who used Web-based EHR system portals showed higher rates of physician office visits and telephone calls with providers compared with nonusers, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Higher rates of after-hours clinic visits, emergency department encounters and hospitalizations were also associated with EHR portal use among patients, researchers said.
